Zen

20 03 2009

I actually don’t mind being a cashier for xxx place that I work for part time. I have co-workers, which is really cool. I miss co-workers. Though I still need to find a full time job. My pay at xxx is min waige, and that isn’t enough to pay a loan that I have out. My hubby is burdened with brunt of the bills, and that and his own work stress is wearing him out. I hope to get something that will at least pay the bills.

Staples- part time

11 03 2009

Well I got a job at the store working part time, at min waige… and to tell the truth, that’s better than nothing. I also asked a woman who does modeling for artists to get me on the list of available models. That is another part time job. Maybe I can pick up a bunch of part time gigs and freelance assignments, and make the same I used to make when I worked full time.

My dad is getting slightly better, enough to want to pull out his life support system.

I’m half way knitting through a poncho for myself…which is kind of cool, and there is a glimmer of hope when it comes to insurance payouts.  Maybe, just maybe, I’ll get some money this Thursday…that would be so cool. I’m hoping that the worst is over.

Overqualified- Rant.

7 03 2009

Dear Potential Employer:

Please don’t use the word overqualified, or use this as a reason not to hire me. Honestly, If I can do the job take me. Don’t make me out to be a princess who can’t sleep on a pea. Right now, dear employer, I am lucky enough if I can get enough dimes together to go to a job interview. If you hire me, I’ll be fantastically grateful and will stay, working for much less than what I used to make, only because less is so much more than what I have now: which is zero.

Feeling Frustrated.

darkplace

Well my EI files are still under review, they say they will “try” to come to some kind of resolution March 8 or the next business day…which is March 9. I am counting pennies in order to go on the bus. I seriously can’t wait till it’s warmer so I can take my bike…I sludge through the many want ads and keep on applying. I had one job interview that seemed promising two days ago and should hear from them by Friday Morning.

Buckies was supposed to call me for a phone interview today, but the time for them to call has passed, and I’m wondering if they just forgot about me. I have to take the dog out for a walk. Hindsight: I should have written down their number and followed up. They are in the US so, who knows. I’m hoping that they will call me at 5pm my time which is 2pm their time.

Tomorrow I have an interview for a retail position: I am that desperate. It’s part time, but that is some money as opposed to zero money which is where I am now.

Sorry for the whine, I’m in a bit of a dark place today.

What do I want to be when I grow up?

office-me

I recently went to a seminar where I have signed up to a job help program that will test me for my skills. This will help me discover what path I should investigate. I am seriously thinking about this second career opportunity.

Apparently, they will be giving me up to 1000 questions to see what my skills are so I can find a new job that I can be happy with. I kind of like this idea, it seems to hold a lot of potential up for me.  Being unemployed is a bit of an up/down ride though I get a lot of support from my hubby who understands that I am not “slacking off” (this is what my inner voice tells me all the time…the bad me.)

They were very nice there, open, helpful and kind. They even offer free newspapers to people who go there. They also have an over 40 job hunting club that I may take advantage of as well.

I am also trying to network more, I am thinking of looking up Internet companies in Toronto and trying to contact them via the net and asking them for leads and contacts that will help me find my next job.

Are we a little spoiled…well maybe.

I remember a rotary phone and running out of money. I have it so good now, this is a great reminder.

Another Job interview

5 02 2009

job_hunt    Well this week has been a record breaker, what with two job interviews. Hopefully, this is a sign of more to come my way. A lot better than the deafening silence before. This Friday, I have an interview with a e-commerce company…my expertise.

I also saw another job that my fit my abilities as well.

I wanted to take some time out to talk about Second Career, if you are Canadian, and laid off from your previous position, look into it. If you qualify, the Govt will pay up to 2 years of school for you and will extend your unemployment benefits. I am looking into it. As with any Govt thing there are many fiery hoops to jump through in order to get what you want. However, my days of being a single mom on Welfare come in handy here, I am used to the hoops and know that I have to be extremely organized in order to reach the endzone.

So, there will be colleges to visit, and plus I’ll take that course that will help me find out what I am good at. Two weeks of fun really, it will be a nice change from this usual cycle of job hunting that I am doing right now.

Great interview Videos

31 01 2009

I just discovered this on Youtube.com They are great examples of how to interview well especally if you are asked personality oriented questions:

http://ca.youtube.com/user/DenhamResources

I highly recommend looking at these examples especially before an interview. I have gone through this type of interview before, but I wasn’t ready for it. I think I am now. My neighbours must think I’m crazy because I rehearse my answers as I am walking the dog. .so basically I’m talking to myself. Thank goodness it’s too cold for people to be out and about. A few weird looks get shot in my direction, but I figure if I can take that, I can take the pressure of performing in front of someone who wants to know exactly how you tick.

I have a job interview this Monday, I think I hear the worktruck coming down the street:

work

Well, today I have a mouse, which makes it easier to type on my laptop. I’m not a big fan of the touch pad really.

Volunteer work: Working for the ALS society has been good, I’ve managed to stumble upon a radio station that is interested in focusing on the ALS cause. So that’s one thing.

I’m also thinking about volunteering for St Michaels Hospital downtown as well. I know I’ve been going back and forth between the project management and the administrative duties. I don’t want to underestimate my talents but also don’t want to aim far too high. So, I’m looking for fertile middle ground. I think that the medical industry holds potential as the baby boomers get older, and I could always work towards project management in a hospital setting. Plus going downtown to work at St Michaels would be very fulfilling it would get me out of the house.

Tools: I’m really loving the iGoogle page…you can put widgets on it that will allow you to see your gmail status, search jobs, and check the weather, and make twitter comments…hmmm I wonder if I can connect to my Linked in Page?

Also Monster now allows you to make a profile, which I’ve done- this seems to have a lot of potential for me, because of my preferences, it drives the right job advertisements to my Monster Profile. Kudos to the web team on Monster!
